The University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education(UP NISMED), one of the domains of science learning that every sciences should know to be able to make science learning more meaningful. One of this is Acquiring Scientific knowledge. Scientific knowledge is acquired through variety of activities and experiences. This domain focuses on some of the processes, skills, and concepts that students need to develop in order to collect and organize information about the world.
Under this domain, students should be able to: a) design investigations in science; b) conduct laboratory/and or field activities and c) obtain information from a variety of sources(Project Q- Learn,p.4)
The lack of a natural constituency for science causes short- and long-term damage. Without basic science literacy , adults cannot participate effectively in a world increasingly shaped by science and technology. Without a flourishing scientific and engineering community, young people are not motivated to dream of “what can be,”and they will have no motivation to become the next generation of scientist and engineers who can address persistent national problems, including national security, healthcare, the provision of energy, the preservation of the environment, and the growth of the economy, including the creation of jobs
Improvements in student achievement are solidly linked to teacher excellence, the hallmarks of which are thorough knowledge of content, solid pedagogical skills, motivational abilities, and career-long opportunities for continuing education. Excellent teachers inspire young people to develop analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to interpret information and communicate what they learn, and ultimately to master conceptual understanding. Simply staed, teachers are the key to improving student performance.
