More ways to ensure effective learning

THE Department of Education said it is finding more ways to ensure that learning will be more effective especially on the basic education level.
This is in response to the challenges that confront the country’s education system.
The agency is well aware of the need for a more focused effort in finding more effective ways of making learning happen.
In fact, the Department has launched “Sulong EduKalidad” in 2019 as a “comprehensive reform to enhance the quality of learning” in K-to-12 schools in the country.
There have been calls to look into the looming “learning crisis” in the country after results of various international learning assessments ranked Filipino students among the lowest in the world in terms of science, mathematics, and reading competency.
From these assessments, Filipino students also scored low in skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
Among the factors affecting the performance of students in school include issues of malnutrition and stunting, school closures, distance learning, poor teacher quality, and unequal access to learning materials.
This learning crisis should be addressed immediately, with the government taking the lead in building an education system that Filipino learners deserve.
Stakeholders and organizations in education should also work with the government to find and implement the most appropriate response to address the crisis in education.
