Ever since the pandemic has forced schools to shut down, the Department of Education had to figure out a way to open a new school year without risking the health and safety of both teachers and students. Thus, modular distance learning was introduced to the Philippine education system.

Modular distance learning uses learning activity sheets or LAS. These modules are distributed to students once a week. Teachers provide additional instructions and guidelines to their students through online platforms.

Although the system is foreign to Philippine education, modular distance learning has its advantages.

One of the major advantages of these modules is the promotion of personalized learning.

As students study at home with their modules, they learn at their own phase and eventually discover what learning style is best for them. Students are able to discover their strengths and weaknesses with the lessons or topics that they need to answer in their modules.

Moreover, modules also allow flexibility since modules are given once a week, students have ample time to answer them anytime, any day within the given period.

Modules also offers a wide range of educational resources online and offline. At this day and age where the Internet can be easily accessed, students get unlimited resources for their modules.

There is no guarantee when we can be completely free from the pandemic, so for now, modular distance learning is the new normal for our education syst em.
