-

MANILA---Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas on Monday, March 8, 2021, said the simultaneous service of search warrants for loose firearms and explosives in Calabarzon was legitimate.

The police raids on Sunday, March 7, led to the killing of nine people, Sinas said. Regional labor group

Pamantik KMU and Karapatan have identified five of the fatalities as members of progressive groups.

“It’s not illegitimate operation, it’s legitimate operations because they are covered with search warrants. Kung alam n’yo lang kung gaano kahirap kumuha ng search warrant maiintindihan n’yo,” Sinas said in an interview with reporters in Camp Crame.

“You have to justify to the judge (and) bring witnesses. Those are legitimate operations that are valid and covered properly by documents issued by the court,” he added.

Aside from those killed, 15 were arrested while four evaded arrest. He said they have yet to identify the fatalities and determine their affiliat i ons.

Police Colonel Chit Gaoiran, spokesperson of Calabarzon Police, said those who were killed had engaged the raiding team in a gunfight.

She denied that the operations were related to President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to kill rebels if they carry guns and “ignore human rights.”

“Nagkataon lang po na ito po ay nangyari sa panahon na may statement ang ating mahal na pangulo. Hindi naman ito nangyari overnight na may sinabi ang president may nangyari nang ganito. Joint efforts po ito, vinalidate ang info bago nag-apply ng search warrant,” she said in a radio interview.

The raids were conducted in the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Rizal, which form part of Calabarzon.

Gaoiran said a total of 24 search warrants, all for illegal possession of firearms, were issued by the court and were simultaneously served.

Various firearms and explosives were confiscated during the raids. Gaoiran said She said they were still consolidating the reports from concerned offices.

Karapatan identified those who were killed as Manny Asuncion, coordinator of the Cavite chapter of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan); Nasugbu Batangas fisherfolk leaders Chai Lemita-Evangelista and Ariel Evangelista; and Melvin Dasigao and Mark Lee Coros Bacasno of urban poor group Sikkad Mont al ban.
