New approaches in teaching, learning

RESPONDING to the challenges of curriculum and education, the Department of Education (DepEd) is now adapting to new approaches in teaching and learning.

In fact, the agency has set a roadmap for the review and updating of curriculum for Kinder to Grade 10. This came over persisting challenges, even as DepEd continues the review of the curriculum, especially in this time with the pressure to rely on technology and the pressure to respond to what everyone describes as the new normal in the light of COVID19.

The Department has also laid down a roadmap for the 2022 version of the K to 10 curriculum.

The initial agreement is to intensify reading, computing and social emotional skills for Kinder to Grade 3. Something that is simpler, but smarter, according to the DepEd.

The important thing is that learners can read, along with important knowledge and skills. Even if they are not taught, once they become interested, they will read and discover the world on their own.

In addition, DepEd will also review the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) implemented this school year and assess if these are sufficient for learners to acquire knowledge and skills.

These competencies were chosen to simplify the process of learning, given the limitation of distance learning.

As part of the review process, the roadmap also identified the horizontal alignment of the curriculum to ensure learners’ progression from Grade 1 to Grade 10.

What the DepEd expects from the curriculum in the future after COVID-19 is that it is still focused on what is very important.

The Department is eyeing to finalize the curriculum review by this year and conduct consultation sessions by early 2022.
