Quo Vadis K to 12?
Alice M. Pineda
Since 2011, critics have been very vocal on their primary concern. They insist that government is not yet ready for this new system and that this is more of additional burden to students and their parents. (Three Practical Benefits of the Philippine K to 12 Curriculum).
Instead of focusing on the pessimistic view of the critics, why not deviate our concern on the optimistic or benefits that the millennials can receive from this.
Considering the benefits, first preparedness for tertiary learning graduates will be considered young adults. Hence, they will be more equipped to deal with much higher level of learning when they enter college education. Second, readiness to join the workplace for it empowers students to make a choice on their own. Third, skill competency in the global job market. It aims to improve Filipino students’mathematical, scientific and linguistic competence with the new curriculum. DepEd promised to offer higher quality education through tracks. Each track will give students enough time to master a field of their choice and enhance their skills.
Now what K to 12 has its full implementation, where does this system lead us? Taking note of the advantages that it could provide to our learners, hopefully, the clouds of doubts of some critics and detractors of this system will be refocus to the promising yields that our learners can reap as they become life-long learners and globally competitive both in work and learning areas where we could say that the government did a great job in this program and it is indeed beneficial.
