Parent’s Guidance as an Important Tool in Achieving Quality Education Amidst Pandemic
Dante U. Bangug
Over the years, parents have always been on their children’s side. From the day they were born up to until now. For a child, parental guidance and assistance are essential for their growth as they continue to engage themselves in the outside world. Worldwide consciousness regarding the pandemic’s fast-spreading outbreak has been a significant concern around the globe. This event escalated terror and panic in the Philippines, posing threats to the country’s healthcare system. Because of the pestilence, schools in the Philippines, which is spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED), schools are forced to adapt online learning (for private schools) and blended learning (for public schools) salvage the academic value and performance around the country. New approaches are adapted and added in the academic field concerning the ongoing threats. Teachers and students cannot execute the new methods by themselves. Learning a modern and brand-new procedure inside the classroom can be tricky and confusing. New adaptations can be hard to manage due to some known shortcomings. Being one of the teachers’ partners, the parents must play a crucial role in improving the performance and acquisition of knowledge for their children. As there is no personal interaction between teachers and students, teachers can only see their students right in front of the screen but do not see and monitor how the students are doing inside the discussion. Both blended and online learning can be efficient, but there are situations and factors to be considered. For example, not every student inside the class discussion can cope with the rest of the class in answering the activities; not every student has the same rate of knowledge acquisition, some are fast learners, and some are late bloomers. The parent’s connivance in the educational process opens the chances for educational institutions to enhance and improve the modern existing school programs (Durisic & Bunijevac, 2017). Parental involvement and control boost each aspect that the school and the students need to obtain mastery and improve knowledge allocation. In addition, according to the study conducted by Durisic and Bunijevac (2017), extended parental grip resulted in an increased improvement of the students’ academic performance, uplifted teachers’, and parents’ gratification, and provided a great atmosphere in school and inside the discussion. In conclusion, a parent’s involvement in their child’s studies is a vital thing that can drastically lift the effectiveness of online/blended schooling as parents help their children to understand the lessons, the efficacy of the knowledge acquisition increases, which allows both the teachers and their children to step up their pace in discussion.
