Groups urge town councilor to run for Porac vice-mayor

-

PORAC— Leaders of various groups in this town have been pushing for Councilor Francis Laurence “Budoy” Tamayo to run for vice mayor in the 2022 upcoming elections.

Porac Association of Barangay Kagawad (ABK) President Roy Serrano said “it is the right time for Tamayo to run for vice mayor.”

“As a former kagawad (village councilman) himself, we have seen Councilor Tamayo’s dedication to public service, his diligence, and humble heart in serving the people of Porac,” shared Serrano, a councilman of Barangay Jalung.

Transportation leaders Januario Hernandez and Wilbert Yusi echoed Serrano’s statement.

“Through the help of Councilor Tamayo, we gained access to the office of Mayor Jaime ‘Jing’ Capil by becoming our voice. He relayed to our honorable mayor the needs of the transportation sector especially during the height of the pandemic,” Hernandez, president of the Porac Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers’ Association (FEDJODA), expl ai ned.

For his part, Yusi said it was through Tamayo’s initiative that help established the Porac Federation of Tricycle Operators

and Drivers Association (FEDTODA).

Councilor Tamayo has always been supportive of us in the transport sector. If he decides to run for vice mayor, we are in full support him,” Yusi said.

Justine Ocampo, a Scholar ng Bayan recipient of Tamayo’s office, shared how the councilman prioritized the education of young Por acañoes.

“We believe that if Councilor Budoy becomes the head of our Sangguniang Bayan, he will surely push for wider access to quality education among young Poracañoes,” Ocampo said. Tamayo has expressed gratitude to the support shown by various sector leaders.

“We are very thankful to our sector leaders who believe in our capacity as a public servant,” he said.

to the raging pandemic, now worsened by the community transmission variant," Casilao said.

"The COVID numbers continue to rise at an alarming state," he added.

"We don't want to continue counting the sick and the dead. We want concrete and effective solutions to the pandemic," the Anakpawis leader said.

Casilao claimed that the government's policies and budget priorities remain skewed. "How can we expect a health-centric pandemic response when the government wants to implement budget cuts for public hospitals?" Casilao asked.

Out of the P5-trillion proposed national budget for 2022, the DOH will only get P242.22 billion or 4.82 percent, he said.

National government hospitals, including the Lung Center of the Philippines, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, and Philippine Heart Center, have budget cuts for their Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), according to Casilao.

The country's top COVID referral hospital, the Philippine General Hospital's MOOE, down by P130 million and has zero capital outlay for 2022, he said.

Casilao said that DOH subprograms like the Family Health, Immunization, Nutrition, and Responsible Parenting and Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases will also receive lower budgets.

"Sapat na badyet at tamang patakaran ang kailangan tugon sa pandemya. Hindi kailangan ng masa si Secretary Duque at pangungurakot ng iilang tiwali sa gobyerno," he said.

The Philippine Statistics Authority has listed COVID-19 as the fifth leading cause of death next to heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, neoplasma, and diabetes, Casilao added.

For two days in a row, the country breached the 20,000 cases mark, bring the total number of COVID cases to over 2 million.

As of September 5, new cases registered infections to 2,080,984.30
