Understanding GSG (Good School Governance)
Christelle Kate T. Mallari
Understanding GSG or Good School Governance is very important if an educational institution wants to realize its vision and accomplish its mission of strengthening the foundations of learning and delivering quality education through prudent use of resources by its various units from teaching faculty to non-teaching staff.
Paul Cabrelli of Consilium Education emphasizes that a school's strengths are factors to achieve effective school governance.
He cites three essential elements to realize good school governance:
PURPOSE: Confirm what you are in existence to do. Understand the responsibility to establish the overall direction and ethos of the school while overseeing the progress of its main policies
INVOLVEMENT: Know how the school operates and they can then assess in the strategic vision of the school, taking a “big picture” view of operations.
CONTRIBUTE: Volunteer time and energy. By focusing on the essentials of good school governance, making a positive contribution to the success of the school.
Through these standards or essentials, good school governance could be achieved and sustained as well as provide strategic direction to ensure educational objectives are realized through effective and efficient use of resources, accountability, and participation of people in decision- making.
There are other ways to improve school governance including clarity of roles and responsibilities, experience, strategic focus, and communication.
But by and large, cooperation and coordination of stakeholders in a particular educational institution would ensure efficient day-to-day operations and thus allow good school governance to flourish. to
