PROJECT: E-READ
CYNTHIA E. TANGLAO
The pressing need to address the reading difficulty of learners is underscored in the proposed reading intervention program entitled Project E-READ (Enhanced- Reading Effectively and Developmentally Through Explicit Teaching). This is to intensify the advocacy for reading under the HAMON: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiatives) issued under DEpEd Memorandum No. 173, s. 2019.
Furthermore, parents, volunteers, and some other stakeholders shall be encouraged to participate in promoting the culture of reading through the Brigada Pagbasa Reading Program. Reading classes will not only be done with the teachers alone but with the help of the other stakeholders.
Project E-READ will also utilize Radio-based instruction and TV-based instruction through the joint efforts of the English Teachers, parents, and some other stakeholders.
The proponent adheres to the Implementation Guidelines set by DepEd Region III. These guidelines provide the direction in fostering and sustaining a culture of reading among our learners. The initial activity is the Profiling the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil IRI) in Grade 7-10 learners. This tool determines the reading level of the learners. The same with the English teachers they shall take the assessment test on teaching reading to establish the baseline data on teachers’pedagogical knowledge. The result of the test shall provide direction on capacity-building for teachers in teaching reading.
The proposed reading program shall focus on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Good thing that teachers who attended the “Division WebinarWorkshop on Enhancing Instructional Competence to Strengthen the Teaching of Advanced Skills and Comprehension Analysis” were able to cascade it to the English Teachers during their LAC sessions. Tailored materials and process will greatly increase the chance of improving.
This project is a product of intellectual discussion during the school’s strategic planning workshop. This project is included in the school’s BELCOP which was presented to the school’s stakeholders and in the presence of Mr. Walter Estabillo, Cluster 10 PSDS.
Project E-READ aims to equip learners with essential reading skills and comprehension strategies, improve learners’reading proficiency, and increase learners’achievement rate.
The Project is characterized as a reading intervention program, which involves the development of reading materials, explicit teaching strategies, and student-centered activities. The program also targets specific reading comprehension skills; this aims to develop mastery among the learners. The focused nature as well as the instruction and activity driven program is supplemented by regular evaluation to trace the improvement of the learners. It also aims to collect and compare data to determine the consistency of results.
Project E-READ will also utilize Radio-based instruction and TV-based instruction through the joint efforts of the English Teachers, parents, and some other stakeholders.
The implementation starts this month of November 2021-May 2022. It is expected that it shall achieve the objectives of the project.
