Better Teacher

As Vernon Howard once said, “Always walk-through life as if you have something new to learn and you will.” I firmly believe that being a teacher is being a life-long learner. Learning does not stop once you graduated but it continues as you go on through your chosen vocation. In my own opinion, a true educator is someone who constantly seeks to find innovative ideas and creative perspectives. Each day, as teachers we must find ways on how to make ourselves and our teaching better than it was before. But the question is, how can we be better teachers and what are the ways for us to be one? In my own perspective these are some of the ways that we can do for us to become better teachers.

First, to be a better teacher one must always have goals and a purposeful direction. As teachers, it is very important that we clearly know our goals. Having a visibly designed learning structure from the very start will make it easier and more achievable for our students to learn effectively. More so, clearly knowing our direction and our purpose will create a great impact on how students view and understand our goals.

Second, to be a better teacher one should never stops learning. As B. B. King said, “The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.” Helping our students learn is only half of our work as a teacher because they are not the only ones that are expected to learn a thing or two. We must be always on the lookout for fresh and relevant information about our chosen field. To effectively teach our students we need to be constantly updated on the new ideas and trends in education. Let’s read as many books as possible and learn new skills as we can, then we will be able to keep up with the changes in the education system. If we pursue to become something better than we were before, we will be assured that we will have positive results not just on the performance of our students but also of our schools.

Lastly, to be a better teacher one must be creative and persistent. Thinking outside the box and going beyond of what we think we can be, is something that we owe to ourselves and to our students. Being creative brings life and joy to our surroundings and it teaches us to look at the things around us in a different way. As teachers we also need to be persistent no matter what life brings us as we go on our journey in the teaching profession. One of the main elements of success is how we respond to the obstacles in our lives, may it be in teaching or in life in general. Let’s use our mistakes to strengthen ourselves and make them as opportunities for us to grow.

Being in the teaching profession requires an immense amount of patience, passion, and dedication. However, it is one of the most fulfilling professions. We are part of the most important structures in our society. Being a better teacher is more than the reward of seeing our students learn, rather it is about seeing them succeed in their lives and in their chosen careers. Let’s choose to be better each day because we know that Better Teacher leads to Better Instructions, and Better Instruction leads to Better Schools.
