DTI gives holiday shopping tips to Central Luzon consumers

OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) gave holiday shopping tips to consumers in Central Luzon.
DTI Regional Director Leonila Baluyut urged consumers to plan their shopping early and to prepare a list before going to the store.
“Early planning will give consumers time to set aside budget for their purchases. Also, we encourage early shopping so they can avoid long queues and crowded stores which may expose them to viruses. Having a list of the things they will buy will also save them time and minimize the risk of exposure,” she said.
When buying Christmas lights, Baluyut reminded consumers to buy only certified products which contain Philippine Standard certification or issuance of Import Commodity Clearance in their labels.
This, she said, will help ensure safety and quality of the products.
“Don’t forget to have them [Christmas lights] tested in the store to ensure that they are working. Let us not sacrifice quality for price. Some products are cheaper but they are of low quality, especially Christmas lights with thin wirings. These may even cause fire hazards so we should be wary,” Baluyut said.
In terms of meat products, she reminded consumers to check the weight or volume of the product if it conforms with what is in the label .
Meanwhile, Baluyut also warned the public against different scams perpetuated by traders and individuals this holiday season.
“Don’t fall for holiday promos that do not have approved sales promo permits. If the promo is just too good to be true, it’s not. If you didn’t join any raffle or contest, why would you win, right?” she said.
Baluyut also urged consumers to buy locally-made products when they shop for gifts this Holiday season, in order to aid entrepreneurs bounce back from economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Also, she warned the public to be more vigilant and to report to the DTI any store or outlet that does not comply with the suggested retail price.
“While we are slowly opening the economy, take it easy still when going out and follow the protocols. We encourage you to patronize stores that have the Safety Seal because these adhere to safety protocols,” the director said. (PIA 3)
