HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT FOR EVERY LEARNER
Teacher I AVIJEL L. BARRO
Education aims for the holistic development of every learner. These include, not only their cognitive development, but likewise, their affective and psychomotor domains that cover the acquisition of skills, competencies and val ues.
Now, why do we need to develop every learner, holistically? The main reason for this is to produce individuals who are equipped with knowledge, wisdom, skills and competencies and at the same time, armed with virtues and values that are needed to function well and serve their fellowmen. How can this be accomplished? The holistic development in education is very much evident in the DpEd K to 12 Vision, Mission and Core Values. The agency has indeed capsulized what needs to be fully developed among learners, how it would be accomplished and what values to target and integrate.
Hence, the role of every school in putting these into reality is indeed significant, most especially from the teachers. They should carefully plan and prepare their lessons that would target for the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of learning that in their lessons/instructions, activities for knowledge and skills acquisition and values integration will be a part of every di scussi on.
The School Head and other school leaders in particular, must extend his or her full support in guiding and assisting teachers on how to deliver such instruction. The school administrators should also prepare development programs that are relevant to the teachers that are based on needs analysis. Developing every child holistically may be a tall order, but, it is very feasible. All we need is partnership and collaboration between and among the school head, teachers, the home and the community in general.
