ADDRESSING LEARNING GAPS
Joanne K. Marin
Modular Distance Learning has provided opportunities for our students to continue learning amidst the global crisis particularly during academic years 20202021. It made it possible for them to still have progress in terms of continuing their schooling journey even there is pandemic.
And, now that we are transitioning back to face to face learning, it cannot be denied that there has been learning gaps among our learners in their particular grades as there have been lots of competencies that they have not fully learned as one of the impacts of the new normal set up.
Due to this, as a teacher, it is indeed necessary for us to strategize and to fully utilize our contact hours among our learners so they could catch up and learn what they ought to learn.
Indeed, it may be quite disappointing and challenging to realize that our children may have learned concepts from the Modular distance Learning, but perhaps, the direct instruction of teachers really could have made learning more effective among them.
But because no one is to blame in this situation, we must focus on providing solutions instead. One of the essential things to do is to diagnose our learners as to know where they are. It would not help if we would eventually follow the objectives for a given week if in reality our learners have lost a lot of basic concepts which are vital to move on to the next lessons.
Addressing the gaps may not be accomplished in a snap, but with a dedicated and committed teacher, we shall eventually make our learners cope and soon catch up with the competencies they need to develop.
