A Forgotten Yesterday

“If you want to understand today you have to search yesterday.”

The study of history is one of the most underestimated subject in terms of its importance. Most students does not know that it is one of the most important subject they’d ever study. For through it we see a clear scenario of how society, technology and the government worked way back then so we can better understand how it works now. It also helps us understand people. It encourages us to develop a greater appreciation of the culture of other communities. History teaches us to understand that change is inevitable. In the same manner that it gives us a tool that we need to be decent individuals. Good citizens are often informed citizens and no one can be considered an informed citizen without the knowledge of history.

We also learn from history. Decisions are made better when we look back how our ancestors made their decisions in the past. History gives us the opportunity to learn from past mistakes. History is more than just the living record of nations, leaders, and wars. It’s also the story of us. It’s packed with tales of how someone stood up for what they believed in, or died for love, or worked hard to make their dreams come true.

It is lonesome to note that the generation of today are slowly losing their grip on our own history. An alarming incident on this issue was raised when teen housemates of the famous “Pinoy Big Brother” PBB mistakenly answered MAJOHA on question about the martyred priests GOMBURZA. Looking back on the questions that were raised on the history quiz bee it is startling that our youth of today knows so little of our yesterday. That yesterday that our heroes have sacrificed their lives in order for us to enjoy that we have today. Should we just let this generation forget these sacrifices? The youth of today are our hope of the future. How will these hope act properly in uplifting our nation if they know so little of our history. Yesterday is still important today and in the future. Let us act now before the history that we have will be a forgotten yesterday!
