ESSENTIAL 21ST-CENTURY LEARNING
JUVY M. SICAT
For students to be successful in their future endeavors, 21st-century learning is quite essential. We all know that there has been a fundamental shift in learning and teaching because of the pandemic. It is no longer about the so-called 3Rs, but about critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication which are skills essential for learners to thrive in the 21st century. Clearly, there has been a shift from the traditional to the digital classroom. Where before they can just sit back and listen to the teacher, learners now need to be actively engaged in their learning and have opportunities to apply what they are learning to real-world situations. How can schools incorporate 21st-century learning into the curriculum? One way is to focus on project-based learning where students can work on a project together and apply their creativity and critical thinking skills to solve problems. Another is to use technology in the classroom, which is what has been happening for two years, because of the pandemic. With technology comes collaboration and communication, and opportunities for learners to be creative and think critically. Now, people may ask why 21st-century learning is so important. This kind of learning helps students develop the skills they need for the real world because employers are now looking for workers who are not only knowledgeable but also adaptable, creative, and able to work collaboratively. It also prepares learners for an increasingly globalized world, where it is more important than ever for them to be able to communicate and work with people from other cultures. With 21st-century learning, learners can develop the perspective they need to be successful. Students can also learn and grow in a world where information is constantly changing. Learners now have to learn and adapt quickly to changes, and develop metacognitive to be lifelong learners.
