THE ROLE OF NON-TEACHING STAFF IN SCHOOL

As one of the agenda given by the DepEd Secretary Sarah Duterte Carpio during the DepEd’s Matatag Basic Education Report, she stated that the additional hiring of non-teaching personnel will be of great importance in the Marcos Administration. Non-teaching personnel today becomes in demand in every institution to provide assistance in achieving the mission and vision of the school. They are so-called support staff which extend helps to both teachers and school administrators in the office work. Nurses, guidance counselors, librarian, administrative officer, and school heads are generally the non-teaching personnel in school. They carry out a range of duties including office work and support staff in ensuring and delivering quality operations and services to the clienteles. The responsibility of an administrative staff includes the following; assists teachers in the reports given by the agency, support the teachers in maintaining school environment, and other various reports needed in the school daily operations. Although the responsibilities vary from school to school, they need to do the clerical and organizational tasks. This will address the importance of education through the relevance of learning and showing pride in their chosen career. Since non-teaching personnel do not focus in the acquisition of knowledge and skills of learners, they serve in different aspects in school management and operations. They are not involved and engage in teaching children thus they will act as partners of teachers and school heads in the office management. The personnel under non-teaching should have knowledge, skills and attitude towards work which adhere the following ethics like integrity, objectivity, professional competence, confidentiality, and professional behavior. Through these, they will be able to do their job directly with effectivity and efficiency to the concern individuals. Indeed, the teaching and non-teaching personnel in school play vital role in school day-to-day operations. Without them, the department will no longer achieve effective learning experiences needed by the Filipino learners. The role of non-teaching staff is undeniably remarkable in the system of education because of their worthy contribution and service in school management as well as operations.
