ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: A TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE

-

CRISTY S. DAVID

With today's advanced technology, everything can be done constantly, with just a snap of a finger; information is readily served in a silver platter. The sudden popularity of AI came like a thunderstruck—like a deep blue sea ready to be explored. It is indeed mesmerizing yet terrifying; delving into the depths of the unknown, positive reactions of teachers we're thrown, "Artificial Intelligence has the potential to make a significant change to the not-so-ok educational system" others may say, but, is it really okay? Yielding to the assistance of a non-human intelligence, a robot in short, bearing the weight of conscience, relying too much on AI can hamper the students’ natural ability to solve a problem creatively.

POV 1: Drain Brain

Educators perceived Artificial Intelligence as a significant factor in elevating the teaching and learning process. They recognize the potential benefits of implementing Artificial Intelligence as the corner stone for success as it can improve the students’ engagement in school. A bluster of suggestions to make an effective version of education, a mountain of compiled research of experts and other professionals looking for a better way of teaching we're stacked as high as the mountains and terrains but it was all in vain and that made the Artificial Intelligence much more appealing; the last straw of hope or a blind optimism.

POV 2: Brain Drain

Nowadays, most of our learners become lazy due to the overuse and incorrect utilization of different mobile applications. As a Mathematics teacher, it is disappointing when learners use artificial intelligence to create simple written tasks that they can’t even write on their own. They can’t construct their own sentences and paragraphs anymore because of just a single click online, an application like ChatGPT will create an essay for them. Personally, it saddens me to know that most of our learners today no longer exert efforts for their activities and tasks. This only means that the more they use AI, the less they learn and experience the best in life. The creation of Artificial Intelligence may seem like a wish come true but not everything we see isn't always what it seems. For some teachers, it is a nightmare; from the mere thought of negligence of the students towards their academic performance, the excessive reliance on AI can lead to dependency that hampers critical thinking skills and abilities of the students to solve problem creatively may cause jeopardy to the realm of education due to the unethical use of AI.
