MARKING THE HISTORY
Leon Gallery’s Spectacular Mid-year Auction 2016 showcased handpicked significant works by renowned Filipino artists that highly contributed to Philippine history. One of the highlights of the night was a scultpure of a wild boar crafted by no less than the national hero Dr Jose Rizal during the time of his exile in Dapitan in 1895. Through the trust bestowed by Rizal’s family, it is a first that a national hero’s masterpiece was offered on the auction market. Among the other artists whose crafts graced one of the year’s biggest auctions were Pablo Amorsolo, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, and the national artist Ben Cabrera.
