It’s a Dog’s Life

-

his month we cast the spotlight on the game changers, the disruptors, the new influencers in the country. They are on the cusp of something big and all happen to be under 40 years old. Welcome to our “Generation T” issue!

On this month’s cover, we chose seven trailblazers who are making a name for themselves in their respective fields: Mike Concepcion (business), Jess Connelly (music), Reese Fernandez-Ruiz (social enterprise), Jay Yao (photography), Mark Bumgarner and Rosenthal Tee (fashion), and Paul Soriano (fi lm).

Besides them, there are 43 equally deserving individuals who comprise this year’s Generation T list. They are presented in a supplement that comes with this issue and which will be unveiled on 14 April at Shangri-La at the Fort.

In just three years, the Generation T project has become an important list to watch out for and we are proud of this fast development.

From Generation T, we move to a 98-year-old woman who has certainly become famous all over the world. In “The Last Tattoo Artist,” we meet Whang- Od of the ButBut tribe from the mountains of Kalinga in the Cordillera region. On her shoulders, she bears the history and future of her village. Last 27 February, the Philippine Senate acknowledged her life’s work and contributions to the creative fields by awarding her the title of “National Living Treasure.” She continues to practise her craft, and teaches it to a group of young women from the village, ensuring the continuity of this tribal tradition that she has taken to new heights.

In “Double Vision” we get to meet American gallerist David Zwirner and noted German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans on the even of the opening of Zwirner’s first gallery in Asia. The first exhibition was a painting exhibition by Belgian artiust Michaël Borremans, the next one will be oin Tillman. Both men are also on the cover of last month’s HongKong Tatler.

As this year marks the Year of the Dog in the Chinese calendar, we asked nine individuals to showcase their lovable pooches. When people heard we were doing a dog shoot, everyone got excited and asked why their canine friends were not featured. So we promise a part two of this in the latter part of the year. As a parting note, may I introduce my best friend Zach, pictured above? Isn’t he adorable? To see the photos of the other adorable pups, head on over to page 176.

See you next month for our Art Issue, that’s surely will be one for the books! — Anton San Diego Editor-in-Chief
