SEEKING A BALANCE

Homeopathic doctor the country to promote that covers current health issues was recently in a book

-

odern life has reached a point that a scant few people can get through it without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out by the stresses they have to deal with on a daily basis. This is a grim scenario, as many medical professionals are of the opinion that stress has become the root cause of numerous life threatening or debilitating conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and even chronic fatigue syndrome.

Quite recently, New York-based homeopathic doctor Donielle “Doni” Wilson was in Manila to promote her book The Stress Remedy where she presents a holistic way of dealing with stress through a combination of lifestyle adjustments, proper exercise, and an improved diet.

A graduate of Bastyr University in California, Wilson is also a professional midwife and clinical nutritionist, as well as a researcher and formulator of natural health products.

Whenever people go to see their medical doctors, they hear that their health issues are related to stress. But then, they don’t really know what to do about it. Through my work, I’m ust trying to help people understand that there’s a certain amount of stress that is normal. We have stresses that we are really unable to avoid. We all have families and work deadlines, e-mails to answer, and all that it’s the sort of stress that’s part of life. eally, it isn’t a matter of ignoring stress, but rather our need to accept that it’s part of life and we need to take care of ourselves in relation to it.

We know that 0 percent of health conditions are somehow related to stress. Indeed, research shows that there are many ways by which our bodies can cope with stress. But, it really is a lot about self-care.

We really need to learn on a day-to-day basis how to take care of ourselves in relation to the stressors that we face so that we can keep up with our lives and keep ourselves from feeling down.

Our bodies can be very good at managing stress if we give them the chance. If we keep on pushing ourselves—and pushing too hard— then, we don’t give our bodies time to recover. If we can build certain activities that can help our bodies recover into our schedules like sleep, as I’ve heard that many ilipinos get very little sleep maybe even ust a minute of deep breathing a short walk outside eat healthy food and take uick breaks—then that would go a great way towards stress recovery.

I de nitely think so technology has become a stressor for many of us.

The devices prompt us to be on alert most of the time we keep on checking for e-mails, texts, or even alerts on social media. We’re also getting exposed to radiation and blue light which have fairly adverse dopamine a neurotransmitter that regulates body movement and emotional reactions and cortisol a hormone that regulates the metabolism and the body’s immune reaction responses.

We have to consciously tell ourselves, Hey, I need to put this away. I need to put my phone down. We also have to ask ourselves if we are willing to constantly expose ourselves to the stress of fre uently checking our phones and other devices.
