Tatler Philippines

’Tis the Season!

-

ecember has always been my favourite time of the year, not only because I was born on this month, but mainly because I love the whole package that comes with the holidays. One of my fondest memories is the excitement I shared with my siblings as we anticipated the gifts we would be receiving.

As I grew up, however, I began to look at the season as one that is more about giving than receiving, which is why the general theme of philanthropy is apt for this December issue. In these pages, Philippine Tatler celebrates those who have so generously given of their time, resources, and energy to those in need. Ten of our top picks join the rest from the Asia region in our “50 Philanthropists Changing the World.”

Another regional list, “50 Eco Warriors You Should Know,” is also featured in this issue. They are the people in the region who are leading the efforts in doing something about climate change, animal protection, and clean energy initiatives, to name a few.

Appearing on the cover for the first time is Alice Eduardo, a woman with a “Heart of Gold” (page 174). A pillar of Philippine society, she has earned the admiration of many with her business acumen, generosity, and genuine kindness. Although I have known her for quite a while, I still learnt so many new things about her when Bambina Olivares and I interviewed her for this cover story. Like how, with no educational background in engineering or construction, she carved out a successful career in this industry. Just like countless other admirable women, she is changing the face of male-dominated jobs. She says, “The world has changed and I make sure that the world I operate in knows that gender is not a factor in delivering a good job.”

Her company, Sta Elena Construction and Development Corporation, has grown to be one of the most successful in the country. She has hurdled numerous obstacles to be where she is now. Here is a woman who defies convention and is to be praised for her determination, humility, and kindness. She is admired for all these and I am so honoured to be her friend.

I had a great time doing the shoot at her home in Los Angeles; check out what went on behind the scenes on page 30.

You’ll also get to know Trevor and Evelin Weber-Neilson, US-based philanthropists (she is half-Filipina) who make it a point to be social catalysts in everything they do. Read about their story in “The Power of Two,” page 202.

Take a tour through the new National Museum of Natural History and be spellbound with its unique design by Architect Dominic Galicia. It will make you feel proud to be Filipino, thanks to its emphasis on ingenuity and innovation.

Since it’s Christmas, check out Tatler’s ultimate holiday gift guide, produced in partnership with Rustan’s, for curated and fun-filled items your loved ones will surely enjoy.

Make the most of holidays this year. Be inspired as well as inspire. Give. Celebrate. Have Faith. Love. See you in 2019!
