Normally, you would agonise over what you would want to do in life, shifting interests through the years, chucking childhood dreams that turn out improbable, then finally settling for an achievable career be it by choice or by consequence. But not for Fabrizio Buonamassa Stiglianni. When asked what he would be doing if he were not designing, Bulgari’s creative director for the watches division was, for a moment, tongue-tied. “Honestly, I don’t know,” he candidly admits. “I was born with a pencil and a pen in my fingers. I have to think about that [question].”
From his office at the Bulgari headquarters in Rome, Italy, Fabrizio shares with Tatler that he has always enjoyed drawing since he was a young boy growing up in Naples. “I must be four or five when I started drawing. And I drew mostly characters in comics or objects.”
Never parting with this love for drawing, he focused on a career which would allow him to draw to his heart’s content and earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial design. He joined Bulgari in 2001, after several years of designing cars for Fiat in Turin. Fabrizio sees several similarities in designing both. In a previous interview, he said that the car and the watch share the same design goals: use, performance and, perchance, a dream. The challenge, however, is to fit these goals in the much smaller space of a watch.
