University of Pennsylvania How was your high school life?

Very dynamic and formative. Transferring from Xavier School to the British School Manila allowed me to experience two distinct school cultures, to venture beyond my comfort zone and find new friends while maintaining connections with existing peers. I found myself exploring new interests in Model United Nations debates and creative writing—all the while pursuing my passion for service and outreach through leadership positions in Habitat for Humanity and Red Cross. Perhaps my most memorable high school experience was spearheading Thimun Singapore 2020, the largest annual Model UN conference in Southeast Asia. The relationships forged and conversations held with both student organisers and UN experts were invaluable towards my personal development. Looking back, I am grateful for the privilege of leading these diverse initiatives, and I anticipate the multitude of opportunities offered in college and beyond.

How was high school particularly during a pandemic?

Graduating on a screen was rather disappointing, to say the least. No proper goodbyes to my teachers; no laughs, tears, or hugs with the people I was with through four years of high school. It was certainly not the ideal way to end a year of online school made worse with cancelled extra-curricular events. Nonetheless, I applaud the efforts made by my teachers and parents to produce the best possible graduation experience amid the existing limitations on physical gatherings. However, the pandemic, I believe, also produced positive outcomes. If anything, it provoked me to be more appreciative of the support and comfort I receive from friends and family. It has taught me the value of creating and maintaining digital connections in an increasingly digital world. Most importantly, these circumstances have made me more adaptable and resilient to adversity. Equipped with these skills and mindset, I hope to face college and all its daunting challenges with renewed optimism and fervour.

What are you most excited for?

I’m most excited to join clubs and organisations related to my interest in economics. Meeting likeminded students, professors and industry experts will give me a sense of belonging and direction as I navigate through college life.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I intended to take a major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I see myself working in the US, perhaps as a banker, consultant, or software developer. Who knows? My goal is to grow—both as a person and a professional—by pursuing my passions wherever they take me.
