Quevedo assails attack on Maguindanao chapel

Cotabato City – Cotabato Arcbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo assailed the recent attack on a chapel at Barangay Labu-Labu in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao, deeming it “malicious” and “gravely disrespectful” of Catholic beliefs.

In a statement released Tuesday by the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Quevedo lamented the destruction of a portion of the chapel’s wall as with the burning of several religious icons therein, “an abhorrent desecration of a place of Catholic worship.”

The incident was first reported on Nov. 9, with Shariff Aguak Fire Marshall Alonto Blaim claiming gasoline was used in torching the chapel effigies.

Quevedo is hopeful the “provocative” act won’t affect the “harmonious” relationship between Muslims and Christians in the community.

The cardinal urged the clergy, the religious, and the lay faithful “to be always alert to the ongoing threats of violent extremism.”

He urged, however, “Be calm. Despite provocation, follow the Lord’s injunction of peace and not revenge.”

Meanwhile, Shariff Aguak Mayor Marop Ampatuan wants a thorough investigation on the matter, following reports the crime was perpetrated by Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).

Last June 23, suspected BIFF combatants attacked paramilitary installations in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, destroying several religious statues inside a local chapel.
