JUST A THOUGHT: The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age. – Lucille Ball

MAKE HER BEST ACTRESS: Rufa Mae Quinto thought she was to play a character fit for a Best Actress award when offered to lead the Cinema One filmfest entry, “Bagyong Bheverlyn.”

“But here I am, sabaw na naman.” She says she ought to be named Best Actress out of respeto. Rufa Mae provided the laffs and the ample visual Oct. 2 during media launch of C-1 filmfest that runs from Oct. 12 to 21 in select theaters around Metro Manila.

The veteran actress, built up in sexy-comic roles, plays a woman hurt by a broken love life in “Bagyong Bheverlyn.” Each time she weeps or draws out her angsts (hugot), she can affect the weather, causing upheavals (storms).

Rufa Mae says she can’t seem to shed her booba, mindless, sabaw character but finds comfort in the thought that she’s in very good company under the Cinema One festival. “Many of us here are respected artists,’’ she said in a self-deprecating tone.

Rufa Mae’s next film is a joint-starrer with Ai Ai de las Alas, a powerhouse combination of two great comedians.

50 FILMS IN FEST: Now on its 14th year, Cinema One Originals handed film grants of ₱3 million each to 12 original narrative features. In 2019, the amount will be raised to ₱3.5 million each.

Three of the 12 featured films this year are made by first-time directors.

Cinema One head Ronald Arguelles says more than 50 films will be exhibited during the week-long run. The list includes outstanding foreign films and restored local classics.

The festival opens with a remake of a remake, “A Star is Born,” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (director). Here are the Cinema One 2018 films: “Pang-MMK” (directed by John Lapuz). “Never Tear Us Apart” (formerly “Fisting”) by Whammy Alcazaren.

“A Short History of a Few Bad Things” by Keith Deligero.

“What Home Feels Like” (Joseph Abello).

“Hospicio” (Bobby Bonifacio). “Paglisan” (Carl Papa).

“Mamu And A Mother Too” (Rod

Sigh).

“Asuang’ (Rayn Brizuela). “Bagyong Bheverlyn” (Charliebebs Ghetia).
