‘We all do better when we work together’

- Marilyn C. Arayata

WE need one another. “We all do better when we work together.” Basketball players understand this very well – and so do other athletes who are part of a team. Cooperation is very important.

Aesop’s fable reminds us of the importance of cooperation. A dying father called his two sons who were always quarreling despite his admonition for them to stop it. One day, he asked each of them to break a bundle of sticks. They could not do it. The father then asked each of them to pull the sticks one by one and break them. It was easy! The point which the dying father wanted to make was clear. The sons, people in general – are stronger when they are united.

People feel braver and stronger (they also become wiser) when there is support from other individuals and groups. Families, workers, friends, private and government institutions can do better when they are united.

If we will do small things each day in the spirit of cooperation, life will also be less stressful. If we will consciously do something good for our team – our family, our friends, our church, our company, our community, imagine the strength and success that can be enjoyed by everybody.

Mother Teresa once said, “None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.”

What important things do you regularly do as signs of cooperation? What else can you do to make your team stronger?
