Power trio

WHAT makes a winning Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry? Is it simply about casting the right stars? Is it about crafting a wholly entertaining story? Is it about employing fantastical effects?

For “Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles,” it is all that and more.

Coming together ostensibly to make sure they got all bases covered are today’s biggest stars: Vic Sotto, Maine Mendoza and

Coco Martin.

At a press conference, Coco crowed they have done their utmost to make “Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles” the most “exciting and entertaining” family movie yet.

“Andito na lahat eh,” he said. “May aksyon, may comedy, may kilig, may kaunting drama din... siguradong lahat ng manonood lalabas ng sinehan na masaya.”

If Coco seems too sure it is because he is the brains behind the whole operation. He said so himself.

“Ako ang lumapit sa kanila,” he related, sharing how he got in touch with Vic’s people. “Sinabi ko may ideya ako, isang pelikula na bagay sa amin ni Bossing. Natuwa ako na pumayag agad sila. Ang maganda pa roon, sila naman ang nag-offer na isama din si Maine.”

In “Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles,” Vic, Coco, and Maine are a trio of law enforcement agents out to topple a gang of hoodlums.

Coco, it seemed, learned a lot with the Philippine National Police (PNP) complaining about their portrayal in “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano.”

He made clear this time they won’t have to worry.

“Magiging proud sila kung paano namin sila pinakita dito,” Coco said. Meanwhile, Vic shared how happy he is to have worked with Coco on the film.

“Matagal ko na siyang sinusubaybayan eh,” he said. “Kahit noong indie days pa lang niya, sabi ko magaling na aktor ito. Lalo akong humanga nang makatrabaho ko siya. Mabait si Coco. Bukod doon very passionate sa trabaho. Hindi puwede sa kanya ‘yung puwede na. Mabusisi.” Coco, on his part, explained, “Siyempre kapag katrabaho mo idolo mo, gaya ni Bossing, gusto mo galingan, gusto mo ‘yung maganda talaga. Nakakahiya naman na lumapit tayo sa kanila tapos hindi tayo handa.” Coco plays Maine’s love interest in the film, and many were quick to tease him with the possibility something romantic might have sparked between them. But Coco said, “Hindi ‘yan siguro puwede magkamag-anak kami eh.” “Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles,” screens in theaters, Dec. 25.
