POC chief to attend executive meeting

-

Philippine Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas announced yesterday that he will attend a session called by majority of the members of the POC Executive Board on Tuesday.

In a statement released through POC Communications Director Ed Picson, Vargas is canceling the Board Meeting earlier called by the POC Secretary-General scheduled for Monday.

The POC head said he will work out a mutually acceptable schedule for a meeting with the entire Executive Board.

Vargas is hopeful that his presence will “clear up matters in the interest of unity at this crucial stage of our preparations for the Southeast Asian Games.”

The country is preparing for its hosting of the 30th SEA Games late this year.

The meeting was called upon after several sports association presidents questioned the turtle-paced preparations for the SEA Games with only five months left before the event fires off on November 30.

POC board member Clint Aranas said that among the issues to be tackled is the existence of the Phisgoc Foundation, which is not the organizing body approved by the POC board.

“We’re not calling for an election or declaring any vacancy. All we want is for the POC president to come forward to tell us the truth and discuss how we can help him,” said Aranas, the archery president and general manager of the Government Service Insurance System, during a press briefing late Friday.

“Let me clarify that there is no power grab here. We want him to stay and finish his term. But in the spirit of good governance, we’re asking him what’s happening. It is normal for the president of any corporation to report to the members of the board.”
