UE virtual champ in men’s fencing

University of the East virtually locked its eighth consecutiv­e men’s title after winning two more team gold medals Thursday in the UAAP Collegiate Fencing Tournament at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Drawing inspired performanc­e from two-time MVP Sammuel Tranquilan , the Red Warriors topped La Salle, 4530, to capture the men’s team saber gold.

UE later fashioned out a 45-38 win over Ateneo in the men’s team epee final, thanks to another scintillat­ing showing by Tranquilan.

The Red Red Warriors scored a 45-35 win over the Green

Fencers in the men’s team epee semis to forge a duel with the Blue Eagles, a 45-36 winner over University of Santo Tomas in the other pairing.

UE now has four golds and two silvers after three days of competitio­n.

The Warriors turned back the Growling Tigers, 45-38, in the men’s team saber semifinals, while the Green Fencers beat the Blue Eagles, 45-41, in the other pairing.

Meanwhile, De La Salle won its first women’s gold courtesy of its foil team.

The Lady Fencers withstood a late Lady Eagles charge in the Finals to score a 45-42 victory.

De La Salle’s Divine Romero showed tremendous composure over reigning MVP Maxine Esteban as Ateneo fell short from its fightback from a 3140 deficit.

The Taft-based side topped defending women’s champion UE, 45-37, in the semifinals, while the Lady Eagles scored a 45-24 victory over University of the Philippine­s in the other semifinals pairing.

The Lady Warriors remain on top of the medal tally with a 2-1-3 haul heading into the final day of team events. De La Salle and Ateneo are tied in second place with one gold, one silver and one bronze.
