Before you give it away

- MARILYN C. ARAYATA

AS more people struggle financially due to lockdowns, bankruptcies, and job cuts, kind-hearted souls are also on the rise. There are individuals who can not close their eyes to the sufferings of their neighbors even if some of them are also struggling.

When thinking of giving a gi , a form of assistance, or a donation, it would be good to pause for a while and consider the following:

–If you don’t like it for yourself, don’t give it away. How would you feel if you were given the same thing? If an object is not in good condition, throw it away. Treat every person you know the way you want to be treated.

–Do not delay. Consider every appeal for assistance as urgent. The Bible says, “If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”

–Do not always think that somebody is taking advantage of your kindness. What if your roles are reversed? You need help for thenth time, and the other person is hesitant. Things may be going well with you right now. How sure are you that there will not be heartaches and difficulties in the coming weeks and months? The future is uncertain. We need one another.

–Leave something for yourself. Know your responsibilities and your boundaries. How much are you willing to give? That must be clear to you and to those who always ask for help. There are takers who do not know their limits.

– Forget what you give. Remembering it is like expecting to be repaid for your generosity and kindness. Give without strings attached. Not every person you helped will thank you and show you the same concern, but the universe has a unique way of meeting your needs and giving you other blessings. God will not forsake you!
