Visayas police chief denies statement vs fellow cops
CEBU CITY – The chief of the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) denied issuing statement implicating retired and active police officers in gun-for-hire activities.
"I never said there are policemen serving as hitmen. What I said that if there are policemen who are into gun-for-hire activities then they should be investigated," Sinas said.
Sinas issued the clarification after PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde instructed him to run after policemen who are moonlighting as hitmen for syndicates.
Sinas said that he has cleared the matter with the PNP chief.
"I explained it to him that I never said those things. I was misinterpreted," said Sinas.
The issue cropped up after Sinas talked about the recent spate of killings when he graced a Facebook live interview by a local newspaper here.
Sinas clarified that what he said was that the PRO 7 is willing to investigate if there are policemen who are accused of being hitmen by drug personalities.
"These stories that policemen are involved in the spate of killings are all rumors. I did not say these accusations are conclusive and definite," Sinas said.
Sinas said the PRO 7 have yet to find evidence to prove the existence of gun-for-hire policemen.
Albayalde said the PNP is taking exception to these allegations, saying that such illegal activities are not being tolerated.
The PNP chief warned that erring policemen will be meted with the full force of the law.
Sinas advised the public to review the interview to settle the matter.
“What happened was lost in translation. I reviewed the interview, I spoke in Bisaya. I said “basin” which means maybe. So nothing is absolute,” Sinas explained.
