ORE RHYME – Can’t be helped if stars (local and foreign) become part of showbiz lingo. After all, they give luster, intrigue, color to the showbiz scene. Before giving some examples, Highspeed, as always, gives this reminder. Showbiz lingo is more rhyme than reason. Not meant to offend. Having said that, on with showbiz lingo.
“Luz Valdez” – Loser. Also “Lotlot de Leon,” “Lucy Torres,” “Lucita Soriano.” “Winnie Santos” – winner.
Also “Winwyn Marquez,” “Winnie Corderto,” “Winnie Monsod.”
“Nanette Inventor” – invent stories – like some letter senders to “Maalala Mo kaya,” but the staff have a way of finding out.
“Aleli Abadilla” – chaperone,” alalay” – like Nora Aunor in “Bona.”
“Carmina Villarroel” – karma. Bigger karma is “Carmi Martin.”
“Rica Peralejo” – rich, moneyed. “Pilita Corrales” – forcing through, trying hard, as in “pilit na pilit.”
“Purita Sta. Maria” – poor. Also “Purita Alma.”
“Jolina Magdangal” – already circumcised. “Julie Vega” – caught… especially by the police.
“Tom Jones” – hungry, “gutom.” “Peque Gallaga – fake.
“Sharon Stone” – shabu, drugs. “Mahalia Jackson” – expensive, as in “mahal.”
“Lady Gaga” – isn’t the meaning obvious? PLAY ON – There are also play on the names of stars.
“Bitter Ocampo,” “Charo Santos-Conscious,” “Cherry Pie Lupaypay” “Haggardo Versoza,” “Presentacion Romero.”
“Ate Vi” ( atrevida) , “Ate Vangie” ( Ativan), “Ate Rita” (arthritis), “Ate Aida” (AIDS), “Ate Alma” (alzheimers), “Ate Koring” (kuripot).
