An effective method vs. drugs

With the start of the new school year, there is now a move for students to undergo a random drug test in all secondary and tertiary schools in the province. In fact, the Cebu Provincial Anti- Drug Abuse Commission proposed to the Provincial Board the enactment of an ordinance for such conduct.

The commission’s chair, Board Member Carmen Remedios Durano-Meca, said the proposal aims to intensify the drive against drug abuse among students. But there is still a need for a public hearing before the PB can pass an ordinance.

A set of guidelines had been outlined by the Dangerous Drugs Board on the conduct of random drug testing in schools, an undertaking also provided by Republic Act 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Law.

For its part, the Department of Education has thrown its support to the drug test proposal. In fact, Dr. Arden Monisit, the provincial schools division superintendent, wanted it extended to school personnel.

As we see it, this move is a good way to help students be more aware about drug abuse. To heighten the campaign, all concerned agencies should coordinate for the success of its implementation.

Of course, it really helps if parents would be in the forefront of the move having their children undergone the drug test. They, in the first place, are in the best position to know the behavior of their children. So enabling them to participate in the campaign would really raise the level of family awareness.

However, to intensify the anti-illegal drug campaign in schools, a mere random drug test is not enough. The best way to keep the students away from drugs is to constantly make them aware of the serious consequences.

A very effective method is to implement a lesson on drug abuse in schools. The education department can lead the way through vigorous information drive that should be permanently included in classroom program.

Combatting drug abuse among students should not be limited only to random test in schools. The education department should strike a blow by having the students taught about how illegal drugs can ruin their future and life.
