The Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) submitted to the court a list of available housing slots for the qualified residents of barangay Luz, Cebu City who are facing demolition.

The DWUP submitted 32 available slots located in different relocation sites owned by the city government. The available slots are in Tisa, Bulacao, Inayawan and Basak Pardo ranging from 21 to 72 square meters.

DWUP Chief and lawyer Collin Rosell said that they submitted the list for compliance to the order of the court. He, however, said that they still support the residents’ fight against eviction.

The residents were at the City Hall last Monday for a meeting with Mayor Michael Rama. Rama called Rosell, City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete and City Attorney Joseph Bernaldez to the meeting to explore all options to help residents who are facing eviction.

The court has not implemented yet the demolition against 29 families of sitio Mabuhay, Lubi and Nangka in barangay Luz. They are facing eviction after the court ruled in favor of Sitio Nangka Homeowners Association Inc., Sitio Mabuhay Homeowners Association Inc., Sitio Lubi Homeowners Association and the Province of Cebu over a civil case the residents filed against the said Homeowners Associations.

The residents asked the court to defer the demolition until the City Government is able to prepare relocation sites for them. The DWUP initially offered the relocation site in Duljo-Fatima, which the residents rejected because the site is not prepared yet. They said that pre-existing structures have to be demolished first before they can occupy the lots. –
