Cebuanos top national painting competitio­n

Two Cebuano artists dominated last month’s first ever Cebu National Painting Competitio­n.

The two winners, Mark Lloyd Belicario and Adeste de Guilmo bested 13 other finalists to win their respective categories.

Belicario and De Guilmo each bagged the P100,000 grand prize for the T r a d i t i o n a l / Representa­tional and Figurative Category, respective­ly.

The national art competitio­n was a project of Ka-Alyado ng Sining.

It was organized and funded by art patrons/ connoisseu­rs, Atty. Diosdado " Jojo" Allado, Richard T. Ang and Cebuano businessma­n Michael Lloyd L. Dino.

The competitio­n held its judging at the Sacred Heart Center, Cebu in July followed by the awarding of winners held at SM City Cebu Art Center during the opening of the exhibition of the 26 winning entries.

Around 200 entries came from all over the country.

Renowned judges chose 26 of the best pieces, 13 each from the two separate categories.

A cash of P75,000 and trophy was given away to the two second placers. A cash of P50,000 and trophy were also awarded to the two third prize winners.

Second and third prize winners for the Traditiona­l/ Representa­tion Category are Felix Catarata with his piece Mudflat Market and Emar Lacorte with his art work Kinabuhi sa Quiapo, respective­ly.

Second and third prize winners for the Figurative Abstractio­n Category are Pasa-Hero by Ben Cruz and Kalesa sa Calle Crisologo by Jeffrey Salon, respective­ly.

Five finalists from the two categories were given P10,000 each and certificat­es. Another 5,000 each were also given to the five merit awardees from the two categories.

Ka-Alyado ng Sining also sponsored last year's Carcar Competitio­n.

Finalists for the Traditiona­l/Representa­tion Category are: Mananabo by Ramon De Dios; Harana sa Batis by Walter Vestil; of the New by Christian Quiros; Maja Blanca by Maria Lourdes Inosanto; Angelus by Facundo Tallo, Jr.

Finalists for the Figurative/ Abstractio­n Category are: The Dance by Paul Arenas; Outing by Tupe Peralta; Paskotitap: Ang Parada by Mary Elwin De Jesus; Bound by Marrz Capanang; In Harmony With... by Noel Sagayap.

Merit Awardees for the Traditiona­l/Representa­tion Category are: Sto. Nino Flower Vendors by Clint Normandia; Family Day by Melbourne Paano; Kinabuhi sa Probinsiya by Randy Plarisan; Market Hues by Geraldine Ocampo;

Give us this Day by Jesus Rona.

Merit Awardees for the Figurative/ Abstractio­n Category: Tina- Taho by Sariel Ancheta; Muka-Og Kalayo, Mulatay sa Alambre by Ivan Macarambon; Ang Magbabanig by Danilo Celum; Planting Pineapple by Malvin Lim; Deboto by Juan Tulas.

Each category's panel of judges were composed of three judges from Manila and two judges from Cebu, each of them known for their expertise in the field of art.

Judges for the T r a d i t i o n a l / Representa­tional Category were Art Associatio­n of the Philippine­s president Fidel Sarmiento, Fil de la Cruz, a well known painter and has a mastery of the mezzotint medium, elite Philippine artist and lepidopter­ist Justin ' Tiny' Nuyda, Cebuano artist Jose 'Kimsoy' Yap, Jr. and Chito Alcordo.

Sarmiento, dela Cruz, Nuyda along with Cebuano artists Javy Villacin and Karl Roque, Jr, were judges for the Figurative Abstractio­n category.
