Aboitizland holds 4th Inter-school Chess Tournament
A boitizLand, Inc. recently held its 4th Kiddie Inter-school Chess Tournament, bringing together 23 schools to the province’s widest-reaching chess event for grandmasters –in-training.
The Inter-school Chess Tournament is a project of the AboitizLand Chess Club. The tournament is the culmination of a year-long series of chess clinics designed to sharpen the trainee- youngsters’ games.
This year’s tournament was held at the iMEZ at Pueblo Verde in Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, an AboitizLand commercial village.
Over 200 students participated in the daylong game event which was dominated by Team Balamban I compose of Balamban Central School, Cornelio Melgar and Jose Chona.
Canduman Elementary School of Mandaue City was awarded as the tournament’s 1st runnerup while Bacayan Elementary School in Cebu City romped off with the 2nd runner-up award.
Awarded Board Medalists were James Fernando Diloy and John Rey Gapuen of Canduman Elementary School, Jerry Panganoron, Jr. of Abucayan Elementary School, Mary Jean Tanolite and Joshua Christopher Tolo of Yati Elementary School, Karl Eve Mar Modequillo and Ricky Lorenz Calamba of Casili Elementary School, Jan Gerald Diamola and Euzenio Alperez of Bacayan, Rey Sumalinog of Mabolo Elementary School, Jose John Fernandez, Geramie Gemarino and Kent Ivan Camoro of Balamban District 1, Diether de los Santos of Buanoy Balamban District 2, Michael Cuyos and Christian Jay Athnel of Ibo Elementary School and Kent Kyle Ardiente of Pulangbato Elementary School.
The AboitizLand chess program started with just 60 children from three Metro Cebu-based elementary schools participating in the weekend chess clinics. The numbers have steadily grown over its four-year run.
The clinics, and the culminating tournaments, have been brought to the different schools and venues, including Balamban in Southwest Cebu.
The program is conducted as a means for the company and the AboitizLand chess club to help mold better citizens by molding character, promoting good sportsmanship and enhancing the mental abilities of the young.
