A man was killed while another was injured after a truck loaded with lumber rammed a concrete road barrier on the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Cansomoroy, Balamban town, last Wednesday past 3 p.m.

The brakes of the Isuzu Forward truck with license plate numbers TBP992 reportedly malfunctioned, forcing its driver Saturnino Villordon, 49, of Barangay Tangke, Talisay City, to drive for the barrier rather than plunge down a cliff.

Villordon survived the injuries he suffered but truck boy, Oscar Saraosos, 44, of Barangay San Roque, Talisay City, suffered major injuries after he was pinned to the passenger seat.

The two were rushed to the Balamban Provincial Hospital but Saraosos was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

PO1 Donard Pitogo, desk officer of the Balamban Police Station, said that the truck was supposed to transport lumber to the mountain barangay of Lamesa from Barangay Sunog when the incident happened.

Villordon was traversing a descending trail and kept on applying brakes when it suddenly malfunctioned.

“Wala na ma-control sa driver kay diritso-diritso na man sila sa ubos gikan adtong kurbadahon nga lugsongon nga dalan,” Pitogo said.

As of now, police are still waiting for the family of the casualty to appear at the police station for any possible action to be taken.

On the same day, over 30 people, mostly children aged four to 16 years old, were injured after the minibus they were riding on fell down a cliff in Barangay Quiot, Cebu City past 9 a.m.

The Mitsubishi Canter (SJC 300) owned by Barangay Basak-Pardo, was on its way to the Scalabrini Noviciate, a retreat house located in San Carlos Heights at that time. About 28 children were on the bus to attend a seminar on Development of Self Esteem on Children, sponsored by the Barangay Council on the Protection of Children of Basak Pardo.

Also on the bus were two barangay staff, four Sangguniang Kabataan officers and two women, who have daughters attending the seminar.

All the passengers, including bus driver Cristiniano Palabrica, 44, survived the accident with only minor cuts and bruises. Palabrica is now under police custody.
