Bangs Garcia

braves first title role

- By RICKY L. CALDERON

K apamilya star Valerie “Bangs” Garcia, a Davao native and a graduate of Ateneo De Davao University first gained notice because of her long bangs that tended to cover her beautiful face. But there is more to the star than her attention-getting bangs.

She got her baptism in drama via ABS-CBN soap operas namely “Palos,” “Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal” and “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo.” She won the Best Supporting Actress trophy from the 2011 Pasado Awards for the movie “Segunda Mano.” She took the sexy route by posing as cover girl in FHM and MAXIM.

But Bangs does her sexiest and most challenging role yet in the Mel Chionglo movie “Lauriana” where she plays a ballet dancer in the 1950s who falls in love but suffers in the process to a bipolar Philippine Constabulary soldier portrayed by award-winning actor Allen Dizon.

“I gave my all in this movie. Whatever Direk Mel asked me to do with regards to the sexy and delicate scenes, I did them all, without hesitation. I expect that my family and my fans will be shocked by my daring scenes but I want to show them that I have matured as an actress,” Bangs said.

“Ricky Lee wrote a very beautiful script. That was one of the reasons why I agreed to do the sexy scenes, no matter how daring they were, because I was touched by the script. As to how sexy or daring I am, I’d like the movie-going public to judge. This is probably the first and last time that I would be doing something like this.”

Is it true that she and Allen were stark naked in their love scene and because the scene was quite long, it took them quite a while before they were able to stand up? Both of them were said to be exhausted and drained after that long take.

“Direk Mel opted for a one long take. We started our love scene with Allen and I still wearing our clothes and we were supposed to be drunk. But since Direk Mel was not shouting ‘cut,’ Allen and I just continued with our love scene. We needed to improvise because the scene was taking too long. I agreed to do the extended love scene because it was shot artistically. There was mood lighting. It didn’t come out vulgar.”

“More importantly, Allen was a perfect gentleman during the shoot. He was very supportive. After we shot our love scene, we watched it on the monitor and both of us laughed. It came very well and was done tastefully,” said the sexy actress.

“Lauriana” will be shown from Sept. 11 to 17 exclusively in all SM Cinemas nationwide as part of All Masters Series Film Festival of Sineng

Pambansa.
