84 hopefuls in Talisay file COCs

Eighty-four candidates for the barangay elections in Talisay City filed their certificat­es of candidacy yesterday at the office of the Commission on Elections. Ann-Lou Bacho, Comelec assistant officer told The

FREEMAN that the Comelec expects more candidates to come in the next days.

She said eight of the filers are candidates for barangay captain and 76 for barangay councilor.

The candidates come from barangays Cansojong, Jaclupan, Lagtang, Lawaan I, Lawaan II, Dumlog, Maghaway, Manipis, Poblacion, San Roque, Tapul, and Tanke. The city is comprised of 22 barangays, she said.

The deadline for the filing of COCs is on October 17.

Bacho also said the Comelec will be open from Monday to Saturday and holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be closed on Sundays.

In a related developmen­t, five barangays have given P10,000 each to the Comelec as contributi­on to the barangay election.

The barangays are San Isidro, Lawaan III, Poblacion, Tapul, and Maghaway.

The deadline for the submission of contributi­ons falls on October 18. Comelec had issued Resolution No. 9739 to collect shares from barangays for the barangay and Sanggunian­g Kabataan election.

“Under Section 8 of Republic Act No. 9164 as amended by Section 4 of Republic Act No. 9340, the appropriat­ions of the Commission which shall be used for the implementa­tion of the statutes may be augmented by an amount not exceeding the ten per centum (10%) of the general fund of barangays which have been reserved and set aside for the Sanggunian­g Kabataan pursuant to Section 532 (c) of the Local Government Code”, read the resolution.
