P. Lopez Street, Cebu City

-

This is the street extending from Magallanes Street to Colon Street. Its official name is "Congressman Pedro Lopez." The Cebu City Council, on May 15, 1962, on motion of Councilor Eulogio E. Borres, enacted City Ordinance No. 378 renaming "Carmelo Street" to Congressman Pedro Lopez.

The Council President (Vice Mayor) was Mario D. Ortiz, who later became City Mayor, the members were: Florencio S. Urot, Luis V. Diores, Eulogio E. Borres, Osmundo G. Rama, Nazario R. Pacquiao, Jesus S. Gabuya, Juan C. Zamora and Julio R. Logarta. The ordinance was approved on May 24, 1962 by Mayor Carlos J. Cuizon, the latter's secretary was Vicente V. Pacifico.

The street got its old name from Father Miguel Nellas Carmelo, a curate of the church in Parian in 1860, who was later assigned at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and then as Secretary of the Bishop of Cebu. Fr. Carmelo wrote religious books and novenas.

Carmelo Street, during the Spanish occupation, was then called "Calle Luaisa."

Congressman Lopez died on March 17, 1957 together with the 7th President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay when the plane they were riding on, a Douglas C-47, crashed into Mt. Manunggal in Balamban, Cebu. There were 24 other passengers, among them was General Benito Ebuen, the Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force (the Mactan Airbase in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu is named after him).

The plane, Mt. Pinatubo, flew from the old Lahug Airport and was bound for Nichols Field in Pasay. President Magsaysay visited Cebu on March 16, and spoke before the USAFFE ( United States Armed Forces in the Far East) Veterans at the University of Cebu, also at the Southwestern College ( now Southwestern University) and at the University of San Carlos.
