Dr. Suga Sotto Yuvienco turns 95!

- by FLOR S. YNCLINO

The country's most awarded ObstetricianGynecologist and Cebu's pride Dr. Suga Sotto Yuvienco turned all of 95 years last February 21. To mark this auspicious occasion, her children headed by only daughter Minnie with siblings Jingboy and wife Julie (from New York); Eugene and wife Baby (from Tampa, Florida); Dr. Christopher with fiancée Tani (from Cape Coral, Florida); and Dr. Jose Mari (from New York, who's the only one absent) honored their beloved Mom with a big birthday bash held that the Manila Room of Marco Polo Plaza.

Seeing Dr. Suga (meaning the light) on a wheelchair, we were moved and had lumps in our throats knowing that in her younger days, she was almost always the moving spirit in all the activities and endeavors in the community. She was the primary organizer and leader responsible for the success of Cebu Periculture Center and Maternity House, and was cited for establishing the Women and Children Friendly Center at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center known as the Pink Bldg.

As the old adage goes, her achievement would take a mile. And to put it mildly, Dr. Suga Sotto Yuvienco is a complete woman worthy to be emulated! We are so proud to say this in all sincerity because she was one of our sponsors during our wedding years ago.

Anyway, the dinner-musicale honoring the lady, had the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra which provided nostalgic music of yesteryears. Most of the lady guests hummed to some of the songs played as most of them were colleagues of Dr. Suga in the Cebu Medical Society, Zonta Club of Cebu I of which she was the Charter president, and the Inner Wheel Club of Cebu and other organizations in Cebu.

Cake cutting time, Dr. Suga's children were doing the cutting on her behalf. After which, Senator Tito Sotto, her fave nephew, dedicated a song "Ikaw" to his Tita Bebe where she grasped tightly his hand to signify that she loved his song where again, some of the wellwishers grew teary eyed.

For us and to many, Dr. Suga Sotto Yuvienco was the epitome of a woman who does everything for the sake of humanity and caring for the under-privileged without counting the cost. Long love Tita Bebe and God bless you!

The fact that people of old invented the institution of marriage is telling that the benefits of marriage have been acknowledged since way, way back. It's the marital breakups, instead, that are relatively new. — Why Marry? The Freeman Lifestyle, February 12, 2014
