Lapu officials assure ‘Kadaugan’ success

-

Despite the limited resources, city officials of Lapu-Lapu have assured the success of the reenactment of the 493rd “Kadaugan sa Mactan” this coming April 27 at the Mactan Shrine in Barangay Mactan.

City Mayor Paz Radaza said the Lapu- Lapu City Tourism Office has been given the task to make all the preparations for the weeklong celebration.

Radaza said that they are now finalizing all activities and programs lined up for the incoming celebration.

It was not clear whether the city officials will invite movie actors and actress to play the role of Datu LapuLapu, Ferdinand Magellan and Bulakna, the wife of LapuLapu. But one assurance made by Radaza was to make the event succeed.

The reenactment of the “Kadaugan sa Mactan” has been attracting more visitors in Lapu-Lapu City, especially the balikbayans. The event gives importance to the historic battle between the Cebuano local leader and the Portuguese navigator.

Highlights in this celebration include the food festival participated by the different beach resorts and hotels in Lapu-Lapu City, as well as the Rampada and a street party.

Meanwhile, in anticipation for the increasing number of tourists who will visit LapuLapu City this summer, Radaza asked the city police office to deploy more "tourist police" to barangays where beach resorts and hotels are operating.

With summer about to kick off, Radaza said they are expecting more visitors in Lapu-Lapu next month. She said the police have already prepared for the anticipated surge in tourists.

The Department of Health has also directed vendors at the vicinity of resorts and hotels to make sure that the food they are selling are safe for consumption.

Earlier, the Department of Tourism in Central Visayas urged local government units to prioritize the safety of all visitors in their respected places. Lapu- Lapu City officials said their LGU is one of those who responded to the call of DOT, citing the big contribution of tourism to the city's development. — Jose P. Sollano
