The Nacionalista Party of Cebu City in the 1967 elections

-

In the general elections held on November 14, 1967, the parties in contest in Cebu were the Nacionalista and the Fusion (Liberal Party). Leading the pack for the Nacionalista Party in Cebu was Francisco E. F. Remotigue fondly called "Kikoy", the former Social Welfare Administrator. In the 1965 elections, Remotigue ran for Congress in the old second district, he however lost to Jose L. Briones. The vice mayoralty candidate was Luis V. Diores, the then incumbent vice mayor of Cebu City. Diores, nicknamed Lou, was a graduate of the University of the Philippines for his Bachelor of Laws and earned his Master of Laws at the University of Southern Philippines as magna cum laude.

The candidates for councilor of the Nacionalista were Pedro Clavano (a street is named after him, near the Cebu Provincial Capitol), a holder of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, he was also a councilor and once a Cebu City mayor.

Suga Sotto Yuvienco, a Doctor of Medicine, and daughter of Don Vicente Yap Sotto and Maria Ojeda, was the only woman in the Nacionalista Party slate, and was cited as the "Most Outstanding Physician" in 1966 by the Philippine Medical Association. She celebrated her 95th birthday last February 21.

Marcelino Bontuyan, was a World War II veteran, and a lawyer and then manager of an insurance corporation in Cebu City.

Sotero Navarro, a guerilla officer during the World War II, a lawyer and had a rank of major in the Philippine Constabulary, later became warden of the city jail, and was then called as the Favorite Son of Pardo.

Isabelo Binamira was a former congressman and a lawyer by profession.

Honorato Hermosisima was president of the Cebu Lawyers League.

Ramiro Madarang, the youngest candidate of the party, a lawyer and son of Nacionalist Party Chief Casimiro Madarang, was the Secretary General of the "Young Nacionalistas."

Isaac Bacalso dela Victoria, was a lawyer and a former guerilla officer, a graduate of the University of the Visayas, and was called the Favorite Son of San Nicolas, a year later was appointed as the first regional director of the Citizens Legal Assistance Office, now known as the Public Attorneys Office and the last candidate was Francisco Maningo.

The NP were confident of winning the elections as former allies of Osmeña were now with them, like Mayor Carlos "Carling" Cuizon (the incumbent mayor during the elections), Luis Diores, Benjamin Llanos, and Mario D. Ortiz (served as Cebu City mayor years before the election in 1967).

The Fusion (Liberal Party) was led by Sergio "Serging" Osmeña Jr. as mayoralty candidate, his tandem was Engr. Eulogio E. Borres. The Liberal Party of Osmeña won, with Dra. Suga Sotto Yuvienco the lone survivor of the Nacionalista. Serging however did not assume the position. It was his vice mayor, Eulogio E. Borres, who became mayor on January 3, 1968.
