Mangrove swamps in Toledo restored
To celebrate International World Water Day, Global Business Power Corporation, through subsidiaries Cebu Energy Development Corporation and Toledo Power Company, led a community mangrove planting activity within the 2,000 sq. m. marshland in Luray-2, Toledo City.
As part of the company’s continuous efforts to restore the mangrove swamps near its power plants in Toledo City, some 55 volunteers composed of employees from Cebu Energy and Toledo Power, as well as volunteers from the Community- ENRO and Barangay Luray Pantawid Association, planted a total of 1,400 mangrove seedlings throughout the swamps of Luray-2.
“Mangroves are very important. They create a buffer system along the shoreline that protects us from rising sea levels and storm surges,” CENRO Officer Fedencio Carreon said.
GBP has been protecting the waters of Barangay Luray- 2 since 2012. The Luray creek, with a stretch of 600 meters and adjacent to the mangrove planting site, is GBP’s adopted river under its KABILIN program. Last year, GBP volunteers trooped to Luray creek for a clean- up activity that collected 2,400 kilos of wastes.
GBP is one of the leading independent power generators in the Visayas region with power plants in Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan and Oriental Mindoro. It is a member of the Metrobank Group of Companies.
