Citom to DPWH: Install more lights at the CSCR tunnel

The Cebu City Traffic Operations and Management is asking the Department of Public Works and Highways to install additional lights at the Cebu South Coastal Road tunnel following an accident Wednesday afternoon.

CITOM wants to increase the visibility at the subway to avoid a similar accident in the future. At least three people were injured during the accident involving six vehicles, including a CITOM multicab.

“Kailangan og lights ang whole stretch sa tunnel,” said Citom executive director Rafael Yap.

He said the city needs the assistance of the DPWH to augment the lighting system of the tunnel.

According to Yap, the tunnel should be turned over first to the city government for them to “immediately act” on the matter.

CITOM earlier asked DPWH to turn over the P1.625-billion tunnel to the city government to be able to implement safety measures to reduce accidents inside the tunnel.

The tunnel was opened in June 2010 yet but it has not been turned over to the city government.

Furthermore, Yap said they have no capacity to implement road speed limits since it lacks a radar speed gun, a device used to measure the speed of moving objects.

A vehicular speed over 60-kilometer per hour is prohibited inside tunnel.—
