A display of honesty
In a display of honesty, a Cebuano driver returned a wallet t hat a passenger, a foreign tourist, left inside his taxicab last week.
Pedro Yaon of Barangay Apas, Cebu City did not think twice and immediately returned the wallet that Spanish doctor Aida Palacin accidentally left when she disembarked from the taxicab at the pier area.
Palacin, from Barcelona, Spain, arrived at Mactan Cebu International Airport Wednesday afternoon. She hurriedly took a taxi bound for the pier area, hoping to catch a boat for Bohol.
But when she was about to buy a ticket, she realized she had left her wallet in the taxicab. Fortunately, a jail guard brought her to the police to report the incident.
Good thing the police were able to immediately contact Yaon, who then rushed to the Waterfront Police Station, where the Spanish national sought assistance, and returned the wallet to the owner.
With all the issues hounding the transport sector - from overcharging to arrogant drivers - it's really good to hear there are still people who are honest. And Yaon should not only deserve commendation from fellow Cebuanos.
For setting an example, Yaon has regained the riding public's trust in taxicabs.
Incidents i n which some t axi drivers refuse to honor the reduction i n fares t he Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has implemented have been hogging headlines. One such i ncident was reported to the LTFRB after a driver allegedly tried to attack his passengers after they asked for a refund.
Yaon's good deed is something we all need if we want to make our place an ideal tourist destination. When Palacin returns to her country, she would surely happily spread the wonderful things she had experienced in Cebu.
