Abellar grabs CV’s first gold

Iloilo City- Pearl Angeline Abellar of the Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu bagged Central Visayas’ first gold in the 2015 Private Schools Athletics Associatio­n National Games at the Iloilo Sports Complex here.

Abellar registered 4.63 meters to snare the gold medal in the girls secondary long jump event.

Aside from Abellar, Central Visayas’ tertiary taekwondo bets delivered four golds in the poomsae competitio­n. University of San Carlos’ Miguel Anthony Calamba led the charge with two gold medals in the individual and team competitio­n together with teammate Hermes Lawrence Elpa and Southweste­rn University’s Kylle John Flores.

Calamba also got bronze from the mixed pair with Goldlyn Cabo. The latter contribute­d a silver medal from the team event along with University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Nicole Dayuday and Janica Crezil Ybarra.

PRISAA uses a modified medal count giving Central Visayas three golds for the team poomsae event.

Abellar’s teammates under coach Precing Capangpang­an also contribute­d medals in the secondary athletics. Carmela Therese Dublin and Britney Moira Canete had a 2-3 finish the century dash.

Dublin missed the gold as she was outpaced by a runner from Western Visayas. Shanelle Demylis Siasoyco also had a silver in the javelin throw, while her male counterpar­t Ron Joseph Roque ended with a bronze.

Meanwhile, John Darryl Manos handed a bronze from the steeple chase in the tertiary division.

In the men’s basketball action, Southweste­rn University Cobras led by Mark Jayven Tallo, pulled off a 76-70 victory over Dagupan dribblers representi­ng Region 1 at the University of San Augustin gym.

In men's football, PRISAAVII composed mainly of booters from University of San Carlos started its bid with a 5-0 win against Bicol Region, while the University of Cebu-powered table tennis team posted two straight wins in the men’s class beating Regions I and III.

The Central Visayas women’s team also won against Region XII and IV-A.

Central Visayas men and women's tennis teams, for their part, marched to the semifinal round with the men's team defeating Region XII and the women's team blasting Region XI.

The baseball squad wasn’t lucky as it bowed to Region XI, as the girls’ beach volleyball also lost against Region XI.

Central Visayas’ medals are expected to improve today as the swimming and weightlift­ing action starts.—
