Gumban to make impression in defense

-

Melvin 'Top Gun' Gumban (19-0, 10KOs) of the ALA Boxing Gym vowed to make an impression when he defends his Philippine super flyweight title against former regional champion Rene 'Commander' Dacquel (13-4, 5KOs) in the main event of the ALA-Cobra Energy Drink 'Tunay na Lakas' boxing card tonight at the Super Metro grounds in Lapu-Lapu City.

The 25-year-old Gumban guns for his third straight win by first round knockout, but he admitted that it's going to be a tough task as he battles, Dacquel who once held the WBC Youth super flyweight belt.

"He (Gumban) is a tactician but he's starting to develop his power as shown in his last two fights," said ALA trainer Peter Cuizon. "I am confident that if he can see an opening, then he might score another knockout win against Dacquel."

Gumban believes that a victory will brighten his chances of fighting for a regional title this year. "I want an impressive win to show that I am ripe and ready for a regional title shot. They (ALA Promotions) are planning to give me a chance for the OPBF title this year, and I hope that will push through."

"I cannot say that I can knock him out early, but I will really look for a knockout," added the trusted sparmate of two-division world champion Donnie Nietes and one-time world title challenger Milan Melindo.

In the supporting bout, another ALA fighter in Juren 'Turbo' Labordo (14-2, 9KOs) will slug it out with veteran slugger Jason Canoy (22-5, 16KOs) in an eight-rounder under the flyweight division.

The rest of the card features, Rafael Sueno vs Cris Ganoza; Jefcon Concerman vs Andrew Palas; Raul Yu vs Gerard Suico; and Virgel vs Jhun Ryan Quimbo. — Lemuel P. Maglinte
