After months of being rumored that Brillante Mendoza’s latest film “Taklub” will make its debut in one of the major European festivals, the film will indeed have its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival happening from May 13 to 14.

Mendoza’s Yolanda-inspired drama topbilled by superstar Nora Aunor is entered in the festival’s Un Certain Regard competition.

“Taklub,” subtitled “Trap,” is “the story of survivors in the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda, how they survived, how they picked up almost one year after the storm,” according to Mendoza. It is one of only 53 films selected by Cannes out of around 1,800 submissions from all over the globe.

It is also the acclaimed filmmaker’s fourth film to make it to Cannes, after “Foster Child,” “Serbis,” and “Kinatay.” The latter won him the Best Director prize in the world’s most prestigious film festival in 2009. The late Lino Brocka has also gone to Cannes four times.

For Aunor, “Taklub” marks the second time she is going to Cannes after Brocka’s “Bona” qualified in 1981.

There will be 19 films in Un Certain Regard whose jury will be presided by the actress-director Isabella Rossellini.

“Taklub” also stars Julio Diaz, Lou Veloso, Ruby Ruiz, Soliman Cruz, Romalito Mallari, Shine Santos, Aaron Rivera and John Rendez.–
